THINGS TO DO IN SALENTO TOWN

Salento is world-renowned for its majestic wax palms 🌴 and its well-preserved colonial architecture featuring colorful bahareque facades.

When exploring the town, walking up the vibrant Calle Real (Royal Street) until you hit the stairs of the Salento Viewpoint (Alto de la Cruz) is an absolute must. We highly recommend heading up in the late afternoon; watching the sunset from the top—with views of the Cocora Valley on one side and the clay-tiled rooftops of the town on the other—is a spectacular sight.

Below, we detail the primary trekking routes you can experience once you head out from the town square toward the rural area of the Cocora Valley.

HIKING ROUTES IN THE COCORA VALLEY 🌴

The Cocora Valley serves as the main western gateway to Los Nevados National Natural Park. Here you will find paths for all experience levels, ranging from casual family walks among the palms to demanding technical routes leading to rivers, alpine moors, and glacial summits.

To help you choose the right path, we break down the three most popular hiking options:

➡️ 1. THE PALMS VIEWPOINT TRAIL (FAMILY-FRIENDLY ROUTE)

The short route leading up to the Mirador de las Palmas is ideal if you are traveling with children or seniors. The path is wide, heavily reinforced, and provides a clear panoramic view of the towering wax palm stands. With a bit of patience and a good pair of binoculars, it is highly common to spot the endangered yellow-eared parrot and the golden-plumed parakeet, two key endemic bird species native to this valley.

Along this 1-kilometer trail, you will find several designated photo spots and artistic viewing platforms carefully built to capture memories with the best natural backdrop.

All interactive wooden structures along the trail were strategically positioned to maximize natural daylight and keep the dense fields of wax palms 🌴 framing your shots.

If you keep hiking past these initial photo decks, you will reach the trail intersection that links directly into the next tier of hiking difficulty.

➡️ 2. COCORA TO FINCA LA MONTAÑA TRAIL (MODERATE DIFFICULTY)

To tackle this segment, you must hike past the standard tourist viewpoints and continue ascending up a steep, unpaved mountain dirt road. Upon reaching the top of the climb, you will arrive at Finca La Montaña (a local environmental outpost), which commands an excellent view of the iconic Cerro Morro Gacho, an emblem of local pre-Columbian mythology.

If this technical destination catches your attention, feel free to dive into our specialized Cerro Morro Gacho Trekking Guide.

The total distance from the Cocora Valley flats up to this high farm is approximately 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) of steady uphill marching.

💵 Entry Fee Note: Please keep in mind that traditional private properties located within the nature reserve boundary (such as Finca La Montaña or the valley floor gates) collect a small cash upkeep fee per person to cross through their paths.

➡️ 3. THE FULL LOOP TRAIL: COCORA - LA MONTAÑA - RIVER CANYON

For seasoned trekkers, the ultimate way to experience the valley is by completing the full circuit loop. After passing Finca La Montaña, the path narrows into a single-track mountain trail filled with natural stone steps and roots, surrounded by dense native forest.

Important Update (2026): Historically, this loop trail granted direct access to the famous Acaime Reserve (The Hummingbird House), a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts 🐦. However, please remember that this specific sanctuary is currently closed to the public, meaning the active loop route now diverts hikers directly into the main river canyon.

The entire circuit covers roughly 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) of walking, plunging into humid Andean ecosystems with several unmarked forks. To prevent navigation issues, we highly recommend following the instruction of certified local guides.

🥾 THE SUSPENSION BRIDGES DESCENT

The return leg toward the valley floor runs right along the rushing waters of the San José River. This is a highly scenic, fun stretch where you will need to cross the river several times using traditional wooden suspension bridges.

Keep an eye on the weather: During heavy rainfall seasons (winter), the river's flow can rise dramatically, which can damage or wash away these rustic crossings. Trekking alongside a local guide ensures you have access to safe, alternative single-tracks if the river renders a bridge unusable.

🎒 FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR VISIT

  • 🥾 Deep-Lugged Footwear: The canyon section and wooden log bridges stay wet, slippery, and muddy all year round. Avoid wearing smooth-soled running shoes if you intend to hike the full loop circuit.
  • 🗺️ Do Not Hike Blindly: If you venture past the regular viewpoints into the full loop trail, do so with an updated map track or under the guidance of a local leader. Rapid afternoon fog can easily roll in and disorient you in the upper meadows.
  • 🚗 Beat the Weekend Traffic: If you plan to visit the Cocora Valley on a holiday weekend, massive traffic jams on the single-lane entry road can delay you up to 2 hours. We strongly advise arriving in Salento before 7:30 AM to beat the rush.
  • 🌙 Stay at Least One Night: To truly experience Salento's colonial magic and enjoy its premium specialty coffee shops without the rush of day-trip crowds, booking at least one night of local accommodation is highly recommended.
